WHAT IS BARRE?
Barre is a workout that combines moves inspired by Ballet, Pilates, Yoga and Strength Training that will sculpt, tone, strengthen and elongate the body. In addition to changing the way your body looks and feels, the benefits of doing Barre routinely include improved balance, posture, endurance and flexibility for living your best life to the fullest.

No experience required. Our classes are designed to make everyone feel welcome and get a great workout.
WHAT TO WEAR: Wear comfortable workout clothes, like leggings or long shorts and a tank top or t-shirt. You’ll want to make sure you will be comfortable in a variety of postures. Grip socks are recommended, but our classes can be performed barefoot. If you do not have a pair already, there are a variety of grip socks available for purchase at the studio.
WHAT TO BRING: All you need to bring is a water bottle and a positive attitude. We provide all the equipment you’ll need for class at the studio. We also offer fresh towels for sweat and supply wet wipes for feet cleaning before we step onto the mats.
WHEN TO ARRIVE: If you are a new client, please arrive 10-15 minutes before class to get signed up, oriented to our studio and set up at the barre. As a regular barre babe, please arrive at least 5 minutes early to get set up before class starts. We strive to start and end class on time.
SETTING UP: Your instructor will show you the right equipment and help you get your space set up for class. If you have any limitations, physical or otherwise, please let us know before class. We can offer modifications so you can get a deep work out without any discomfort.
BARRE ETIQUETTE: Be kind and please be on time. We all have different levels of fitness ability and this studio is a safe place for all people who want a fun effective workout. Also, please respect others’ time and arrive early, as late arrivals cause distractions for other clients and cheat you out of a full-body warm-up.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Barre workouts are known for sculpting a lean feminine physique by using light weights & high repetition movements. We focus on isolating small muscle groups (a.k.a. isometric exercises) until the muscle starts to burn and shake. That’s when change happens! In addition to changing the way you look, here are some of the many benefits of barre workouts:
Barre classes target all major muscle groups, often simultaneously, and rely primarily on your own body weight for resistance. Think: A total body sculpting class packed into one hour. If you’re a busy mom, a working woman, or a multi-tasker, say YES!
Confidence is your most beautiful trait. When you feel good in your own skin, you feel powerful. Barre will help transform your body including how you carry yourself. Posture and flexibility-focused moves, combined with strength training and stretching, help you look and feel taller both in and outside of class. Pair this with heart-pumping music and barre class will leave you feeling energized & empowered.
Strong is a versatile asset. Long lean muscles are visually beautiful, but working out also makes you stronger in your daily life, physically and mentally. Physical strength helps with day-to-day chores like lifting grocery bags, walking up the stairs and running after your kids. Mental strength is created by the commitment, consistency and grit you use to get through challenging workouts, and use to get through other challenging moments in life.
Every Barre class starts and ends with stretching. It’s important to stretch before and after you work-out. It helps leave your muscles long and lean as well as avoid post-workout soreness (although,
sorry not sorry, if you work hard you will feel your muscles the next day). Think child pose, hamstring stretches and hip stretches.
Barre is not for the faint of heart. These classes have been known to bring macho men to their knees. Will there will be moments when you want to give up? Yes, Probably. But in class, as in life, we have the potential to persevere through the struggle. The great benefits of a toned physique are earned if you’re willing to push through. So go ahead, get comfortable with pushing beyond your comfort zone, and create the change you’re seeking.

Hi! My name is Jessica Carness. I am a Certified Barre instructor and the owner of Coco Barre, the first Barre studio in Playas del Coco, Costa Rica.
My husband and I opened Coco Barre in May 2019 after permanently relocating from southern California. I worked as a therapist to military veterans for over 15 years before we moved and exercise allowed me to let go of the stress I carried from work each day. I started attending classes at a fitness studio where I was first introduced to Barre. Within a few weeks of starting Barre, I saw improvements in my posture, flexibility, muscle definition, strength and endurance. I was looking better and feeling better. I was hooked! An unexpected bonus were the friendships I made with the other women at the barre.
Barre is a great way to get a Fun, Fast and Effective workout. It’s also a healthy way to meet other fabulous locals. We are located on Calle La Chorrera, 100 meters from the sand and sea.
